Counseling Services

Counseling Services, a program of the Mental Health Association of Frederick County, is one of the few professional therapy centers in Frederick County that offer care on a sliding fee basis. Our professional therapists provide services in a confidential, supportive environment that enhances the dignity and potential of our clients.

“Everyone who comes to Counseling Services is treated with respect; for some it is the first time they have ever been treated in a professional and respectful manner. Most of our clients need someone to listen, believe in them, validate their feelings, and help them find their own solutions. Oftentimes there is no one else in their lives to do that for them.”
~ Cindy Green, LCPC, former Counseling Services therapist

Real Life Story

Years of Terrible Abuse
Buried way down deep for so many years, he did not want to remember the past; it made him sick to his stomach. Sexually abused as a young child, he had been powerless to stop the predator, so it just happened over and over again.

Now that he was going to become a dad, he knew that his fiancé deserved the truth. Not wanting to build his family on dishonesty, he felt ready to reveal his painful secrets, but he couldn’t do it alone. A young couple, they had very little money for therapy. They contacted Counseling Services, and the intake counselor was able to arrange a sliding scale fee within their reach. Relieved, they begin therapy together, immediately discovering a warm and comforting rapport with their counselor.

It was time. After just two sessions, he felt safe enough to speak of the hideous trauma from his childhood. Facing his fiancé, he thought he was going to be sick right then and there. Holding a trash can in between his legs the entire time he disclosed his terrible story, he finally made it through. His poisonous past was out in the open; now she knew.

This incredibly strong young man reached out for help, finding a safe place where he found acceptance and understanding. Through the process of sharing his pain with the love of his life, the couple was able to build a solid foundation of trust, compassion, and support for each other. Now a strong family unit, they are happy together and anxiously awaiting the birth of their first child.
