 PERKS

Partnerships for Emotionally Resilient Kids

PERKS is a new service from Child Care Choices, a program of the Mental Health Association, and it is funded by the Maryland State Department of Education/Office of Child Care.

Goals

Our program was established to help children, age birth through four years old, with social, emotional or behavioral issues by:

·        Assessing the child care environment;

·        Increasing child care provider and parent skills to deal with difficult behaviors;

·        Developing partnerships between parents and providers;

·        Offering technical assistance in person, by phone, or e-mail, as needed; and

·        Making appropriate referrals to outside resources.

Facts to Know. . . .

  •  Statistics show that many children are being involuntarily expelled from child care situations because of challenging behaviors.

  •  Social, emotional and cognitive developments are highly interconnected and are all necessary for school readiness.

  •  Many of Maryland’s young children ages 0 to 5 are not developing the emotional and social skills they will need to succeed in school and be productive members of society.

  • Resiliency research stresses the importance of a child’s relationship with caring, committed adults – child care providers play an important role in the lives of young children.
